This month marks 10 years since I left Windmill Lane. It’s been quite a strange journey since but definitively shaped by the three years that I spent working there. The following is a copy of one of my earliest blog posts, where I remember some interesting facts about the place in which I worked.
FIRST TIME I WENT TO WINDMILL LANE:- 1996
FIRST IMPRESSION:- They had a computer so expensive that they gave it a human name (Henry)
FIRST SUITE I EVER EDITED ANYTHING IN:– Avid 2, 1998, my first short film, Guilt!
STARTED WORKIN IN WINDMILL LANE:- Sept 2004
FIRST JOB I WORKED ON:- Waterways corporate for Animo
MOST EMBARASING MOMENT IN MY FIRST FEW MONTHS:- A month in when I didn’t know anyone in CAR’s name and Jill made me guess one by one and I didn’t even guess one correctly.
WORST PLACE TO BE IN THE SUMMER:- Avid 4/5/6 without a fan
WORST PLACE TO BE IN THE WINTER:- Anywhere in the other building (Film House) before the heat came on in the morning. And thereafter anywhere in the other building outside of 2 meters from the radiator.
BEST PLACE TO BE IF YOU HAD NO WORK TO DO & NOWHERE TO GO:- Number 4 reception
WORST PLACE TO BE IF YOU HAD NO WORK TO DO & NOWHERE TO GO:- Kitchen (Martin would always walk in)
WORST PLACE TO BE WHEN YOU REALISED YOU HADN’T SET REMOTE ON THE DECK:- Digi-station
FAVORITE TIME OF THE DAY:- 11pm. Everyone has gone home for the evening, all the decks are hooked up to various rooms and you’re on your own schedule but before you get tired.
FAVORITE THING TO ORDER FOR DINNER:- #10 from Chilli Club
LEAST FAVORITE THING TO ORDER:– Medium Deluxe Pizza from Four Star with a can of coke and a 500ml tub of Hagan-Danz (although it always seemed like a good idea at the time and came to 16 quid exactly)
BEST ROOM TO SLEEP IN:– Avid 1
QUIETEST ROOM TO SLEEP IN:- Smoke Suite or Flame 2
WHERE TO GET SWEETS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT:- The storeroom next to Number 4 Studio 1. If not, find a way of sneaking the keys off security and opening the storeroom next to the kitchen.
BEST PLACE TO BE IN THE MORNING: Kitchen with a bagel and a coffee
MOST ANNOYING THING ABOUT THE KITCHEN: There was no place on the counter where you could lean against that would’t be in someones way at some point.
BEST ROOM TO EDIT IN:- Avid 7 (in part due to its proximity to the kitchen)
WORST ROOM TO EDIT IN:- Any of the old macs “Is it still rendering,” “Oh, it’ll just be a minute.” “Oh for fuck sake!”
PLACE I LEAST WANT TO BE:- Lieing under the table in Avid 12 (across the road) rewiring an avid to a shitty Beta Deck and tearing the fuck out of my elbows on the trecherous carpet.
MOST LABORIOUS TASK:- Despotting Tara Road/ writing an effects bible for Shrooms
MOST FUN JOB:- Celebrity You’re a Star
JOB I HATED THE MOST:- Fucking music listings 1 year after the job when the editor hadn’t even named the tracks *cough-Family Silver-cough*
THING I GOT BLAMED FOR AND I DIDNT DO:- Exploding a smoothie in the telecine suit
BEST PARTY WITHIN A PARTY: Avid 7 (orchastrator Garath Nolan,PHD and the other S-Club Juniors)
BIGGEST LOST OPORTUNITY – Not having a movie night in the carpark.
BEST LOCAL:– Neds (I arrived 2 months after Dockers closed down, OK!)
